Sage was believed to increase mental acuity among ancient Romans + was also associated with longevity. As an adjective sage means wise, from the belief that the herb was thought to impart wisdom + improve memory. John Gerard, the celebrated English herbalist of the 17th Century, wrote of sage: "Sage is singularly good for the head and brain, it quikeneth the senses and memory..."
